The locus of the syllable effect: prelexical or lexical?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The claim that the syllable constitutes a basic perceptual unit in French is commonly accepted. It is based in part on the syllable effect [1] obtained with words. The present study extends these syllable detection experiments to pseudowords. Four experiments failed to replicate the syllable effect observed on words. Detection responses in pseudowords are made as soon as sufficient information becomes available in the signal. The different pattern of results obtained with words and pseudowords suggests that the syllable effect is postlexical rather than pre-lexical.

Inhibitory effects of first syllable-frequency in lexical decision: an event-related potential study.
Electrophysiological correlates of the behaviorally well-documented inhibitory effect of first syllable-frequency during lexical access are presented. In a lexical decision task, response times to words with high-frequency first syllables were longer than those to words with low-frequency first syllables and resulted in more negative event-related potentials (ERPs) in an early time window from ...
متن کاملHow and when does the syllable become a reading unit? Developmental evidence in French children
French beginning readers might rely on syllables during reading acquisition. However, no in-depth developmental study has been carried out to determine how and when the syllable becomes this prelexical and segmental unit used in the time course of reading acquisition. We recruited 800 French-speaking children distributed in grade 1-5. We used a lexical decision task in a visual masked priming p...
متن کاملThe locus of the orthographic consistency effect in speech recognition: a cross-linguistic study
To address this issue, orthographic effects must be considered as a function of the processing mechanisms tapped by the tasks. In auditory tasks involving metaphonological components, the influence of orthographic knowledge has been consistently observed when the relation between the phonological and the orthographic representations of the stimuli was manipulated. For example, judging that two ...
متن کاملFlow of information in the spoken word recognition system
Spoken word recognition consists of two major component processes. First, at the prelexical stage, an abstract description of the utterance is generated from the information in the speech signal. Second, at the lexical stage, this description is used to activate all the words stored in the mental lexicon which match the input. These multiple candidate words then compete with each other. We revi...
متن کاملA study of multimodal motherese: the role of temporal synchrony between verbal labels and gestures.
This study examined European American and Hispanic American mothers' multimodal communication to their infants (N = 24). The infants were from three age groups representing three levels of lexical-mapping development: prelexical (5 to 8 months), early-lexical (9 to 17 months), and advanced-lexical (21 to 30 months). Mothers taught their infants four target (novel) words by using distinct object...
